2007 v. 2008 Game 2

And after that painfully long delay, on to game 2...

2007

The opponent: The Penn State Nittany Lions

My perspective: Having not seen the Irish on TV yet, I was anxious to see them with the help of ESPN's cameras. Georgia Tech could just be that good, right? They did go to the ACC championship in 2006. It seemed perfectly plausible that the Irish were just out of whack the week before due to having a gameplan suited for DJ and not Jimmy Clausen. Jimmy looked pretty good at the end of that game so a full gameplan designed for him is going to produce drastically different results. Right?

Mrs. Seamus and I had mentioned to some PSU alum friends that we should get together to watch the game and I was doing everything I could to avoid that. I was trying to be optimistic about things turning around for the Irish in week 2 but I couldn't even call myself cautiously optimistic once actual gameday rolled around. Our friends had called earlier in the day to see what our plans were and I was avoiding the call back like the plague - it would have been way too painful to watch a loss like week 1 in a small sea of white somewhere in Baltimore.

The outcome : The Irish got the ball first and put together a decent drive. A penalty to start the game wasn't exactly what I was looking for but they looked a heck of a lot better than they did to start week 1's game. The missed field goal was certainly frustrating at the end of the opening drive but it was a long attempt (50 yds.) , so things could have been a lot worse.

I have come to the conclusion that good kickers are horribly unappreciated. When you have a good one, it's rare that you thank the football Gods for him unless of course, he kicks a game winning field goal. When you have one that's not getting it done, you curse the inability of the staff to recruit the next Mark Moseley at least a dozen times per game. I think that's a conservative estimate too.

Penn State's first possession ends abruptly with an outstanding interception and 73 yard return for a TD by native Pennsylvanian, Darren Walls. ND 7 - PSU 0 and I am almost ready to go join the small sea of white no matter where it is in Charm City. The Nittany Lions receive the kickoff, run a few plays and politely give the ball back to us in the form of a fumble recovered by another native Pennsylvanian, Joe Brockington. Hallelujah! The Irish came to play!

Shortly thereafter is when the fun stopped... seemingly out of the blue, PSU started to take the game over. The line of scrimmage was virtually dominated by the Nittany Lions for the rest of the game and that lack of physicality lead to more 3 and outs than I care to ever see again. Charlie's pups fall to the Zombie's Lions, 31-10. Ouch. At least Michigan lost to Oregon earlier in the afternoon setting up the battle of the 0-2s in Ann Arbor.

2008

The opponent: The Michigan Wolverines

My perspective: For reasons that will become clear in a few months and of course, God willing, this will be a very special weekend for Mr. and Mrs. Seamus (not in that order). It's a home game for the Irish and again due to our recent little purchase, Mr. and Mrs. Seamus will be tuned into NBC from our new family room. Ever since the skunkbears took over college football's all-time winning percentage, my severe dislike for them has steadily grown into a full fledged hatred of all things maize and blue. Though you may see a vein stick out of my forehead at the mere mention of their name, I certainly have a lot of respect for their program and their school. On gameday, I will be edgy in the morning, growing into a full fledged bad mood by the time the game starts.

The prediction: Unfortunately, Lloyd Carr decided to "retire" at the end of the season and was replaced by Rich Rodriguez of West Virginia. My gut instinct tells me that Coach Rodriguez is a major upgrade for them which is not good for Irish fans. The good news is that there are some gaping holes in the Wolverine offense due to the departures of Chad Henne, Mike Hart, Jake Long, Adrian Arrington and Mario Manningham. That said, I still don't see the Irish winning this game. Our offensive line and front 7 on defense just have too much ground to make up to lead us to victory in a game like this early in the season. Good special teams could make up for slightly losing the battle in the trenches but after last year, I don't think we'll have what it takes there either (yet). A late TD results in: Skunkbears over the Irish, 35 - 31.

Advantage : Push. A loss is a loss and losing to Michigan at home would easily hurt as badly as losing to the Lions on the road last year. The "progress" on the scoreboard compared to the last two years of embarrassing losses will take the edge off my bad mood but giving Dick-Rod the upper-hand in what is sure to be a bunch of hard fought battles during his tenure is going to sting.

Blitzkrieg...Tenuta to ND

Apparently C-Dub is recruiting more than players in '08.

Rumor has it blitz-happy, former Georgia Tech Defensive Coordinator John Tenuta will replace retiring Bill Lewis as ND's new Defensive Backs Coach.

This would be a phenomenal addition, and a great sounding board for Corwin Brown to bounce ideas off of.

ND's D = New level of Nastiness

2008 Urban Meyer Nickname Contest

Urban is at it again, this time going after the ever-coveted JC transfers illegally instead of high schoolers.

I'm officially kicking off the 2008 Urban Meyer nickname contest.

I'm going with Rat-Faced Satan, in honor of another coach from the Sunshine State.

Thoughts? Entries?

Less than 2 weeks until signing day

Recruiting

We're thinking we're going to hold off on profiling all of the ND commits until National Signing Day on February 6th, as you never know whats going to happen until then (knock on wood).

In the meantime, here's a great article on one of our larger commits, Michael Floyd.

Aside from the fact that this kid is a 5-star recruit who just tore it up in the Army All-America game, he seems to be grounded as well.

Let's hope the Irish continue to get kids like this...

2007 v. 2008 Game 1

For my first series of posts, I'm going to do a game by game comparison of the actual 2007 season and my best guess at 2008. I'll try to keep the crotchetiness to a minimum which will be difficult after this past season.

2007

The opponent:
The Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech

My perspective: I was in attendance for the 2007 opener. I marched excitedly into the stadium after a fun but modest amount of tailgating. I found my excellent seat in the lower bowl, towards the top between the 40 and the 45 yard line on the GT side and anxiously awaited the start of the 2007 season. You could feel the energy in the crowd as we all sat, wide-eyed and bushy tailed, in anticipation of Coach Weis' triumphant revelation of our starting quarterback for 2007. Not long thereafter, the only thing I was anxiously awaiting was the sight of the cooler back out in the library lot. The miserable game coupled with my buzz wearing off by the beginning of the 2nd quarter made for a long afternoon staring into an unrelenting sun and wondering how our blocking could actually be as bad as it appeared to be. I am honestly unsure which of those two things were more responsible for the 5 tiny men with 5 tiny jackhammers attempting to chip their way out of my skull.

The outcome : A 33-3 drubbing in large part due to almost 200 yards rushing and 2 TDs from GT tailback, Tashard Choice. His Heisman candidate numbers were probably as much a result of an inept offense as the failure of the defensive front to control the line of scrimmage but regardless, the unveiling of Coach Brown's 3-4 defense wasn't anything to get excited about. If I was playing in the back field for the Nittany Lions, I was getting awfully excited about the Irish coming to town. I left the game hoping that Georgia Tech really was that good but I knew that I would have to wait at least 2 weeks to find out as the powerhouse that is Samford wasn't going to give me much of a feel for that. I also knew that the Irish were basically back to square one with the quarterback situation. In my mind, Jimmy Clausen looked good enough to start the following week but did I really want to throw a true freshman with questionable health out there behind what looked like a very confused offensive line? Please no. Then again, who gives us the best chance to win the game? It was unfair to dismiss Evan Sharpley at this point but he didn't look very confident and Clausen seemed to at least show a little swagger out there. The Jones experiment was a flop to say the least and I couldn't see how the staff could possibly get any of the offensive players back on that wagon. So, in Jimmy we (or at least I) trust...

2008

The opponent: The San Diego State Aztecs

My perspective: Having attended a full third of the 2007 Irish losses in person and all in the house that Rock built, I will likely enjoy the 2008 opener with Mrs. Seamus and our beloved canine, Seamus from our yet-to-be-built family room. This seems ideal at the moment for a few reasons:

1. The new house is putting a cramp in our social/travel schedule as we have not yet learned that Genentech stock is worth investing in, despite how high the price climbs.

2. In the unlikely event that the 2008 season opener takes a turn similar to that of the 2007 opener, I am going to need full access to hard alcohol and lots of it. Waiting another 365 days and anticipating the abundance of anti-Charlie/sky is falling posts across ND nation will be enough to make this grown man cry.

Of course, should we find tickets, I am likely to ponder hitchhiking on the Pennsylvania Turnpike if that's what it takes to get me there.

The prediction: Had the 2007 campaign gone more similarly to the 2006 campaign than the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers season, I would probably be puffing my chest out and claiming that the Aztecs couldn't even beat us with Marshall Faulk in their backfield. Even with that said, I still don't see this contest being all that close. Regardless of whether or not they've been historical powerhouses, schools in states that begin with "Flor", "Tex" of "Cali" always scare me due to the sheer amount of quality talent in their backyards but even with that going for them (which is nice) the Irish are going to be fired up for the home opener and even more fired up to get out there and prove that 2007 was an anomaly. I have little doubt that we will dominate them on offense and I have a hard time seeing us give up more than a touchdown or two, despite the inexperience and lack of recruiting ranking stars upfront. Irish get a win to start the season: 31-13.

Advantage : 2008 in a landslide. Barring an unforeseeable butt whooping at the hands of the Aztecs there's really no comparison here. SDSU could come in and upset the Irish and it would still beat watching the horrific 2007 debacle of a debut.

Why would you start another blog about ND Football....

Why not?

The thought behind this blog is if everyone else is sharing their "expert" opinions on the Irish (and to a lesser extent, college football), why can't the O'C family? We obsess about it enough, might as well have a platform for it. And clearly the middle of January is the best time to kick-start a college football blog, so we're going with it.

"Seamus" and I are going to try and keep this thing rolling through the dead of winter. Expect my posts be both more insightful and less crotchety :)

Anyways, we're officially up. And by up, I mean I posted something.

More to come, until then....

GO IRISH!!!
